Group member Nathan Shauer is the winner of the Best Student Poster in Computational Fluid Mechanics Competition at the 16th US National Congress on Computational Mechanics (USNCCM), July 25-29, 2021. Nathan’s poster was titled “A Three-Dimensional Generalized Finite Element Method for the Simulation of Wave Propagation in Fluid-Filled Fractures“. The recording of the lecture delivered by Prof. Duarte at the 14th World Congress on Computational Mechanics, Jan 11-15, 2021, is available at Slideslive. Prof. Duarte presented a Non-Intrusive Coupling of Abaqus and a 3-D Scale-Bridging Generalized Finite Element Method. This multiscale method is described in the recent paper Non-intrusive Coupling of a 3-D Generalized Finite Element Method and Abaqus for the Multiscale Analysis of Localized Defects and Structural Features.

The competition was held at the Engineering Mechanics Institute Conference and Probabilistic Mechanics & Reliability Conference, May 25-28, 2021. Group member Lishen He is the winner of the Best Student Presentation Award from the XXIII International Conference in Computational Methods in Waters Resources – CMWR 2020, Stanford December 14-17, 2020. Lishen presented “A Multi-Space-Time-Scale Generalized FEM with Transient Local Problems (T-GFEMgl) for Parabolic and Hyperbolic Problems”. Congratulations Lishen!
